Am letzten Nachmittag, bevor unsere italienische Schulkollegin zurück nach Hause fliegt, wollen wir eigentlich noch ins nationale Museum. Aber da ausgerechnet Montag der Tag ist, an dem jedes Museum in Beijing geschlossen ist, muss Martina nochmals nach China kommen, um sich das anzuschauen. Auf Rat von Tian Lin, unserer Lehrerin, begeben wir uns zum Houhai Lake, einem See im Zentrum von Beijing.

Ich war zwar schon in der ersten Woche meines Chinaaufenthalts an diesem See entlang spazieren, aber für Martina würde ich halt nochmals gehen. Meine ‘Selbstlosigkeit’ wird toll belohnt, denn was ich nicht gewusst habe; irgendwann im Dezember stellen die Chinesen die im Untergrund des Sees installierte Kühlanlage an, damit die Beijinger im Winter auf dem See Schlittschuhlaufen und Eishockey spielen können.

Und nicht nur das; es gibt in China etwas, das sich Eis-Ski-Schlittenfahren nennt. Für mich Schweizerin und meine Schulkollegin und -kollege aus Italien und Brasilien ganz was Neues, machen wir alle drei Videos von der Frau. Sie lässt sich aber selbst von drei Ausländern mit Kameras nicht von ihrem Spass abhalten – ich bin nicht einmal sicher, ob sie uns überhaupt bemerkt hat, sie war so voller Elan am Eis-Ski-Schlitteln 🙂

Es war ein wunderbar befreiendes Gefühl, auf diesem mit dickem Eis bedeckten See so frei herumlaufen zu können, sogar für mich Schweizerin. Für unseren Kollegen Mateus aus Brasilien war es das allererste Mal!

Ice-Ski-Sledding in Beijing

On the last afternoon before our friend Martina is flying back to Italy, we actually want to visit the national museum. Too bad that all museums in Beijing are closed on Mondays. Martina will have to come back to China to visit it. Recommended by our teacher Tian Lin as alternative, we walk to Houhai Lake that is situated in the center of the city.

I have actually already been there a month ago when I first got to China, but I decide to be a good friend and go once more for Martina. My being very generous 😉 actually pays off damn well. I didn’t know that the lake freezes over like that in winter. Just a month ago that lake had absolutely no ice on it, even though the temperature was already well below zero. Our teacher tells us later that the Chinese government had some sort of ice machine installed in the lake and some time in December, they start putting it to work. They do so to ensure that the Chinese get to play hockey and skate in nature.

Plus, there’s this sport they call ice-ski-sledding. Something neither of us three (Swiss, Italian and Brazilian) has ever heard of, but it kinda looks like fun. All three of us simultaneously make videos of the woman practising it and I don’t even think she notices us – she is so happily ice-ski-sledding around the lake…

And I’m honest – it is a freaking awesome feeling to walk around that lake on the ice as if it is nothing else. And this from a woman who has seen and been on ice before. For Mateus, our friend from Brasil, it is an absolute first!
