Früher fand man in China in ‘normalen’ Bars nur Ausländer. Chinesen fand man in den Karaoke-Bars.
Das hat sich scheinbar etwas geändert, aber KTV ist immer noch angesagt. Ausserdem singe ich für mein Leben gern und – abgesehen von einer missratenen Showeinlage während den Ferien in Italien – lässt es sich eigentlich noch so anhören. Glaube ich zumindest…
Also feiern wir unseren Kursabschluss-Abend gebührend beim Karaoke.Die Treppe hinunter gelangen wir zum meiKTV. Dort hat es Boxen jeglicher Grössen, wo man sich mit Freunden zum Singen treffen kann. Auch Geburtstage werden dort gefeiert, sogar Geschäftsanlässe.
Wie man die Lieder auswählt? In China, das ich mittlerweile als das Land von WeChat anschaue, selbstverständlich, indem man per WeChat-App einen QR-Code scannt. Anschliessend hilft es natürlich, wenn man die chinesischen Buttons versteht. Mateus’ chinesische Freundin kommt da echt gelegen 😉
Essen und Trinken gefällig? Ein paar Knöpfe auf dem WeChat-App-Link drücken und wenige Momente später erscheint der Kellner mit der Bestellung. Keine Angst, der Kellner ist noch aus Fleisch und Blut, noch kein Roboter. Hoffentlich geht es noch eine Weile, bis sich das ändert.Wann ich wohl das letzte Mal ein Lied von Take That gehört habe? Das waren noch Zeiten…
Auf dem Video* hört man uns leider fast nicht, aber Mateus und ich sind überzeugt, dass es sich live anders angehört hat als auf dem Video 😉 Ist aber eigentlich auch egal. Hauptsache, es hat ordentlich Spass gemacht!

Bezahlt wird am Ende des Abends bequem bargeldlos via WeChat-Pay.
Ich – die einzige Person im Raum ohne WeChat-Pay – komme mir mittlerweile fast als Ausserirdische vor, wenn ich mein Bargeld hervorkrame. Aber ohne chinesisches Bankkonto / Prepaidkarte und zusätzlich entweder teurem Roaming oder chinesischer SIM-Karte funktioniert WeChat-Pay nicht. Und für die kurze Zeit, die ich in China bin, lohnt sich das nicht.
Alle mir mittlerweile Bekannten in Beijing sehen das zwar anders…

Beijing KTV – Karaoke Chinese style…

I was told by a local that 10 years ago in Beijing, you only found foreigners in bars. The Chinese were to be found at Karaoke-bars. Karaoke singing was one of their favourite past times. Over the years that seems to have changed a bit. However, KTV is still in with the locals. As I love singing and since I am not too bad at it – disregarding one particularly bad episode of karaoke singing on a trip to Italy – I really wanted to go to a KTV bar. So when deciding what to do during an evening out with my class mates, I suggested KTV.

Off Gui Jie (Beijing’s Ghost Street) and down a few steps, we enter meiKTV. It is vast and has separate rooms of various sizes, where you can meet up with friends to have a blast while singing to Justin Bieber songs and such… (if one were so inclined – we are not). People also celebrate birthdays here and even the occasional after-work party might take place here.
How one chooses the songs? In China, which I by now call the Land of WeChat, you do that by scanning a QR-Code via your WeChat App. Of course it helps tremendously, if you understand the meaning of the Chinese characters that appear on certain buttons after logging in. Hence having Mateus’ Chinese girlfriend here with us is a huge asset. A highfive to Jennie!!
Feel like some food or having a few beers? Clicking a few buttons on the WeChat-Link, and in comes the server with the order. Don’t worry, the server is still a person, not yet a robot – how long that will take to change though is written on another page. Hopefully still a long time down the road.

I wonder when it actually was that I last heard a Take That song? Good old times…
Unfortunately, there’s not much sound to hear on the video*, but Mateus and I are convinced that it sounded really great live 😉 And if not, so what, we had a ton of fun which is all that matters. Right?

At the end of the night or at the latest at 6am – that’s when this bar closes – the bill gets settled. Of course once again cashless via WeChat-Pay.
I – the only person in this room who has yet to install WeChat-Pay – feel almost alien whilst taking out my leather wallet to pay my part.
But without a Chinese bank account / debit card and additionally expensive roaming or a Chinese SIM-card, WeChat-Pay won’t work. And for the short period of time I’m still in China, it’s not worth it.
An opinion which none of my common Beijingers share…
